If you have a fancy dress party coming up somewhere, do seriously consider the 80s fancy dress styles. You can literally rock wearing one of the outfits that are reminiscent of this wonderful decade, whether you’re an adult or a child.
But why are the 80s so special? The 80s decade was the period when the world began making some drastic changes in fashion. If you consider the 60s or 70s dress (too old fashion) and the current decade (contemporary), you will see how the 80s is sandwiched neatly between the two. This is the reason why the 80s decade is excellent for a fancy dress theme. You could wear most things without worrying you look too punk!
So what ruled the fashion world in the 80s? To put it truthfully, it was rock, pop and then some more rock! If you just wear long hair, leather jeans or tight-fitting denims and white body-fitting sleeveless T-shirts, then your style will definitely not be lost on anyone! The Goth culture was also making its presence felt in the 80s and the rock stars were party to this fad. So go ahead with your leather pants, leather wristbands and the like and you will be there!
You have to only think Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, Led Zeppelin (specially Robert Plant), the early days of Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen and you will have the rock fashion of the 80s to guide you. If you are male, these rock icons are the best to help you with your 80s fancy dress costumes.
But if you want pop, you have the King of Pop to guide you – Michael Jackson. Whatever Whacko Jacko might have been reduced to today, the 80s is incomplete without him. His atrocious attire – check out the videos for Dangerous, Black or White, Remember the Time (though that was later than the 80s), Dirty Diana, Thriller and you will know what this means. Copies of the stuff he wore – and only he could wear – are still bestsellers on the Internet. Have fun wearing these outfits and if you learn how to moonwalk and grab your crotch while going “Oww”, you have made it!
Now for the females! Whom do you look up to? You have some real divas to help you out here. Madonna cannot be ignored for anything. The way she wore a mole or two or none as her mood dictated, her radical hairdos in all of her appearances, her figure-hugging spandex clothes, her conical bras – they are all stuff of 80s fancy dress folklore.
Or, you could look at Cyndi Lauper, another definitive trendsetter for the 80s. If you are following her, you have the liberty of coloring your hair in any way you want. And yes, you can wear clothes as colorful as your hair is, and nobody will bat an eyelid.
Other people whom you can track for 80s female fashion are Janet Jackson (how could one miss her?), Annie Lennox, Roxanne, Cher, Liz Taylor, Gloria Estefan, Tina Turner and even Aretha Franklin. Each of them had a definitive look in the eighties and has evolved since then. But most people would agree – their 80s look is what remains most fixated in memory.
So if you are looking at a 80’s fancy dress theme for you or your children for a costume, you will not have to look beyond these people who rocked the generation. Go ahead and have fun then!
